App & Product Review
The naztech Xtra Drive SD Card Reader is just that - a reader without its own internal memory. This app finds my "external memory" (a provided 16GB micro "SD" card as well as a 32GB card plugged into it) on my 16GB iPhone 5, on my 32GB iPhone 5S and on my 64GB iPhone 6 - all running iOS 9.3.1. Plugging the Xtra Drive into a 32GB iPad Air 1 this app DOES NOT FIND that exact same external memory - a let down as I create online video content and the Xtra Drives appeal to me was quick-swapping media to and from my iPad (which I use for mobile creating and review.) My memory cards were already FAT32. None were NFTS but you can check the format of yours by right-clicking it in Windows explorer and then clicking properties in the drop down menu. Media transferred from the reader to your device doesnt show on your camera roll so youll need this app to manipulate it and it will take up memory on your device, even if cloaked. Playing back media directly from the card in the reader it constantly buffered, compelling me to transfer it to my device for smoother playback (so much for saving space). The lighting connector on the Xtra Drive protrudes from its housing less than it does from an Apple charge cord so most iPhone cases will have to be removed to use the reader because the shoulders of the Xtra Drive bump into the case. iPad cases are usually book-types and seldom encase the body but ah..the irony, this app and reader didnt work for my iPad Air. Lastly, despite the name Xtra Drive, without its own internal memory it is only a u-style micro "SD" card reader (theres a USB end for the PC). Card readers cost only few dollars anywhere and "aircraft aluminum" LED flashlights are 5 bucks by the register. Yet, this thing is expensively priced - $80 where I found it and the store internet-price-matched it down to $66 for me. Its a good concept - product and app - but it needs to go back in the development oven a bit longer and return with a more realistic price. Save your cash and seek a cheaper way.
Lowering rating after using for a while
You must format the cards to FAT32 as the Xtra Drive instruction say. Difficult to do with a Windows computer, use freeware Macrorit NTSF to FAT32 Converter. 4 stars because it took me a day to figure that out. Now it works with a 64 GB card. Update- lowering rating to 2 stars since I cant get AirPlay to work with Apple TV from files on the drive, and for lack of thumbnail views on the files to know whats what.
Wasted money
Ridiculous not even worth it .. It has only found a few pic on my phone which is why I wanted it .. Did back up my contacts but thats it other then that error message and no extra memory created on my iPhone 6 Plus
Very Easy To Navigate
When I purchased the Naztech Xtra Drive and plugged it into my iPad, It immediately sent me to the page in the App store to download this very helpful application. Installation was a breeze and I was up in running in a few seconds. Once in the application, there are four options to choose from. “Contact Backup”, where you can back up any contacts which are currently saved on your iPhone or iPad; “Local Storage”, which you can access and backup any documents currently saved on your phone or iPad; “External Storage,” which allows you to access files currently saved on your Xtra Drive. The Last Option is “Photo Album” where you can view and backup all photos and videos currently saved on your phone or iPad. I also appreciate that the User Manual is included in the settings section of this application, so I don’t have to carry the paper manual around with me. Overall, this app, is very easy to use and navigate.
Wow!
My phone has a 64GB internal memory and thought it would be enough memory compare to my last 16GB i6 but soon I learn to find that I used 48GB in no time and with all the iOS updates which took a good 4plus GB space, I found myself in the same shoe I was in with the 16GB i6. Wow wow...this tiny drive just allowed me to download just about everything I saved on my phone into the MicroSD card yet have access to my files, photos, movies and music on a fly. It also works with my other Apple device! I highly recommend the XtraDrive!!!
